Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, Military historic site and battlefield in Sackets Harbor, New York
Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site is a 70-acre location along Lake Ontario with preserved fortifications and military structures from the early 1800s. Walking trails guide visitors through the grounds and offer views of the water and surrounding landscape.
During the War of 1812, this location served as a naval base where warships were constructed and two major battles occurred, including a decisive engagement in 1813. The harbor then became a significant center for American naval activities.
The site preserves a naval installation from the 1850s with the Commandant's House, where visitors observe how sailors and naval workers lived and worked during that era. Craft demonstrations here show how ships were built and maintained.
The grounds are open to visitors from April through October and offer exhibits, self-guided walking paths, and guided tours. The best conditions for exploring are in the warmer months when all areas are fully accessible.
Horse Island, part of the site today, was acquired through an early federal grant for battlefield preservation and remains a rare example of this early protection. The island allows visitors to see the grounds from a different perspective.
