Stony Point Light, Lighthouse in Jefferson County, United States
Stony Point Light is a white lighthouse with a black lantern room situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario near Henderson Bay. The square stone structure stands approximately 22 meters tall and originally included a keeper's residence on the grounds.
The lighthouse was built in 1826 to guide ships through Lake Ontario's waters and served this purpose for many decades. In 1945, a new light structure was installed, and the building's navigational role was transformed.
Keeper Wiley Gilbert Nickles managed the lighthouse operations for thirty years despite physical limitations, receiving support from his family members.
The lighthouse property is privately owned and closed to public access, so visitors can only view it from a distance. Viewing from the water or distant shorelines offers the best perspective of the structure without trespassing.
In 1902, keeper George N. Gray earned a gold lifesaving medal for rescuing the schooner John R. Noyes crew during a severe storm. This act of rescue reveals the human drama that unfolded beyond the lighthouse's basic navigational duty.
