Watertown Speedway, Inactive racetrack in Watertown, New York
Watertown Speedway was a racing track in Watertown, New York, featuring an oval dirt track about half a mile long located at the Jefferson County fairgrounds. The facility hosted various racing classes including Late Models, Modifieds, and Street Stocks, attracting local and regional drivers competing for victories.
The first racing events on the site began in 1936, and stock car racing started in 1951 when local owners took over and formed the Adirondack Stock Car Club. The track operated for about twenty years before racing operations moved to a different facility in 1975.
The track served as a community gathering where families cheered for local drivers and shared in the excitement of racing together. This grassroots tradition made it a social hub where neighbors and friends celebrated their passion for motorsport as a shared local interest.
The speedway is located in a quiet part of Watertown, away from busy streets, making it easy for spectators to focus on the racing. The site is easily accessible by car and has plenty of parking available nearby.
Many drivers who started here also raced at Kingston Speedway just across the border in Canada, where the same rules applied, making it easier for competitors to race at multiple tracks. Several of these local drivers, like Dick May, went on to compete in NASCAR races and brought regional recognition to the small speedway.
