The 521-acre district contains 3,137 buildings constructed between 1789 and 1930s, displaying Mid-19th Century Revival, Late Victorian, and other architectural styles.
In 1784, West Chester established its downtown grid with 32 parcels divided by Gay and High Streets, becoming Pennsylvania's designated county town by 1788.
The district houses multiple performance venues, galleries, and the Chester County History Center, which operates from the 1848 Horticultural Hall building.
The district offers street parking, municipal garages, and frequent bus connections, with numerous restaurants and shops along High Street and Market Street.
The district includes the site where G. Raymond Rettew and Wyeth Laboratories produced the first mass-manufactured penicillin in 1943 during World War II.
