American Helicopter Museum, Aviation museum in West Chester, Pennsylvania, US
The American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, Pennsylvania, is one of the only museums in the US dedicated entirely to rotorcraft history. It holds dozens of helicopters, autogyros, and experimental aircraft from both civilian and military backgrounds, displayed across a large indoor hangar space.
A former Flying Tigers pilot founded the museum in 1996 with the goal of preserving rotorcraft history for future generations. Over the years it grew from a personal initiative into one of the largest collections of its kind in the country.
The museum sits on the grounds of a regional airport, so visitors can sometimes watch real helicopters take off or land nearby. This closeness to working aircraft gives the visit a hands-on feeling that goes beyond a typical indoor collection.
Most of the aircraft are displayed indoors inside a hangar, so the visit works well in any weather. Visitors who want to look closely at the machines should allow a good amount of time, as there is a lot to take in at a relaxed pace.
One of the museum's aircraft, a small helicopter named Stubby, regularly visits schools to show children how flight controls work. This traveling exhibit is one of the few cases where a museum piece leaves its home to reach a new audience.
