West Hoboken, Historical municipality in Hudson County, New Jersey, US.
West Hoboken was a municipality in Hudson County with two commercial centers at Paterson Plank Road and Summit Avenue, and another near Bergen Turnpike close to Union Hill. The area functioned as an independent township before merging with a neighboring community.
The area began as part of Pavonia in New Netherland when Director-General Peter Stuyvesant purchased the land from the Hackensack tribe in 1658. It was established as an independent township in 1861 and remained so until its merger in 1925.
The municipality witnessed demographic shifts throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, growing to over 40,000 residents by 1920.
The place is now part of Union City and is best explored on foot or with local transit. Visitors should be aware that historical boundaries are not marked, and understanding the area requires local knowledge or research into its past layout.
The first commercial sale of Mallomars cookies happened at a grocery store in this area, marking a notable moment in American candy history. This event connects the place to a beloved treat that later became popular across the country.
