Whittall Mills, Historic industrial district in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Whittall Mills is a historic factory complex in southern Worcester comprising roughly 15 brick buildings arranged along a river tributary. The structures display various architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and served as a hub for carpet and textile manufacturing.
Matthew Whittall started his textile operations in the 1870s with an original factory featuring a mansard roof design. He significantly expanded the complex between 1883 and 1906, transforming it into the largest employer in south Worcester by World War I.
The mill became famous for producing high-quality carpets that reached prestigious clients across the country and beyond. Its success reflected the pride that local workers took in their craft and skill during Worcester's peak industrial era.
The complex sits near Interstate 290 and Crompton Street, making it relatively easy to find. Visitors should allow time to walk through the various buildings and along the river to fully explore the site.
The mill was even selected to produce fine carpets for the White House, a striking recognition of its craftsmanship and quality. This honor showed that Worcester's manufacturing had gained respect at the highest levels of government.
