Windsor Mills Covered Bridge

Windsor Mills Covered Bridge is a timber-roofed structure crossing Phelps Creek with a single-span Town truss design, built from white pine and local stone foundations. The covered passage protects both the wooden framework and travelers from weather exposure during crossing.

This crossing was built in 1867 to carry traffic over the creek and served its purpose through the decades. It fell out of regular use after the 1960s when the road routing changed, and concerns about structural integrity eventually closed it to traffic.

This bridge reveals how 19th-century builders used materials from their surroundings to create practical structures for daily travel. The stone foundations and covered design show engineering choices that were common in rural communities at that time.

The bridge is passable by regular vehicles but not trucks or buses due to its age and structure. Modern repairs completed in the early 2000s restored it for use, so visitors can drive across to experience the covered passage firsthand.

Only a handful of drivable covered bridges remain in the entire county, making this one among the rarest. The road itself has been renamed Covered Bridge Lane in recognition of what travelers will find when they cross.
