Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park, State park in Nelson Township, Ohio, United States.
Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park is an Ohio state park in Portage County, built around a series of sandstone ledges cut through with deep, narrow crevices and passageways. The rock formations sit inside a forested landscape shaped over a very long time by water and ice slowly wearing away the stone.
Ohio acquired the land in two purchases during the 1940s and designated it a protected natural area in 1949. Before that, the site was privately owned and had no formal protection.
Native American tribes valued this location near the watershed divide between Lake Erie and Ohio River for its strategic position and natural resources.
The trails are color-marked, but moving through the rock crevices calls for solid footwear and a good sense of balance on uneven ground. Those who find tight spaces uncomfortable or who have limited mobility may want to stick to the more open sections of the park.
The deep crevices create cool, damp pockets of air that allow tree species normally found much farther north, like yellow birch and Canada yew, to survive here in Ohio. These plants are rare in the state but thrive in the shelter of the rock passages.
