Big Dipper, Wooden roller coaster at Geauga Lake, US.
Big Dipper was a wooden roller coaster at Geauga Lake with a track length of approximately 2,680 feet (817 meters) and a maximum height of 65 feet (20 meters). The ride reached speeds of up to 32 miles per hour (51 kilometers per hour) and could carry 48 passengers total in two trains with four cars each.
The ride opened in 1925 as Sky Rocket and was renamed Clipper in the 1940s before receiving its final name Big Dipper in 1969. After decades as a popular park attraction, the coaster closed in 2007.
American Coaster Enthusiasts recognized the attraction with both ACE Coaster Classic and ACE Coaster Landmark designations before its closure in 2007.
Since the ride has been closed for many years, visitors can no longer access the site today. For enthusiasts interested in its history and legacy, the memory lives on through photographs and documented records.
Engineer John Miller developed over 100 patented technologies for this coaster that later became standard features in many subsequent wooden roller coasters. His innovations in safety mechanisms and ride dynamics made the ride a landmark in coaster engineering history.
