Geauga Lake, Former amusement park in Aurora, United States
Geauga Lake was an amusement park in northeast Ohio that spread around a 60-acre (24 ha) natural lake. The site held several roller coasters and rides across a 300-acre (121 ha) property.
The park opened in 1887 as a recreation area with picnic grounds and added its first steam carousel in 1889. By the 1920s it had become a major entertainment destination with regular concerts.
The name comes from Geauga County, where the park sat beside a spring-fed lake. Visitors came here for decades to ride wooden roller coasters and picnic along the shore.
The park closed in 2007, so the site is no longer accessible to visitors. Some memorabilia and photos can be found in local museums in the region.
In 1926 swimmer Johnny Weissmuller set a world record in the 220-yard freestyle at the park pool in front of 3,000 spectators. Weissmuller later became famous as the first actor to play Tarzan in films.
