Yohogania County, Historical county in Virginia Territory, United States.

Yohogania County was a Virginia county that covered parts of what are now Pennsylvania and West Virginia, running along the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers. It sat within the Allegheny region, where settlers were putting down roots during the 1770s.

Virginia created Yohogania County in 1776 to govern its growing western settlements and to assert its claims against Pennsylvania. Once border agreements were reached in the 1780s, the county was dissolved and its territory divided among other jurisdictions.

The name Yohogania comes from the Youghiogheny River, which shaped daily life and movement for the settlers who lived in the region. Rivers like this one were the main reference points for communities that formed along the western frontier.

Records about Yohogania County are spread across archives in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, so research requires checking sources in more than one state. Anyone tracing this chapter of early American history should expect to work across several repositories.

Yohogania County overlapped with Augusta County, another Virginia county, meaning that some settlers technically lived in two counties at once. This double jurisdiction created real confusion over which local authority actually applied to their land and daily affairs.
