Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop, Historic diner near Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop was a small diner near Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, fitted into a narrow storefront with a single row of counter stools. It served simple American breakfast and lunch food, mainly eggs, burgers, and sandwiches.
The diner was opened in 1950 by Lewis Beckwith Sr. and stayed in the same family throughout its entire run. It closed in 2008 after more than five decades of serving the neighborhood around Yale.
The Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop was woven into the daily life around Yale, where students sat shoulder to shoulder with professors and staff at the narrow counter. That physical closeness made it easy to start a conversation, and the place became a regular stop for people from very different walks of university life.
The diner was easy to reach on foot from the Yale campus and sat in a straightforward part of the neighborhood. Seating was very limited, so arriving early or outside of peak breakfast and lunch hours made a visit much smoother.
In 1989 the diner launched the Doodle Challenge, a burger-eating contest where customers tried to finish several burgers in a short time. The competition drew people who had no other connection to Yale or the neighborhood, turning the diner into a small local destination in its own right.
