Newark Bay Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Newark, United States
The Newark Bay Bridge is a steel truss bridge that spans across Newark Bay, connecting Newark to Bayonne with four traffic lanes. The structure provides sufficient vertical space above the water to allow large cargo ships to pass beneath it and reach the port facilities.
Governor Robert B. Meyner opened the bridge in 1956 in response to growing traffic demands in the region. The structure marked a major milestone for transportation connections between the two cities.
The bridge carries Interstate 78 traffic through an industrial region, supporting the economic activities of Port Newark and surrounding manufacturing facilities.
The bridge offers direct passage for all vehicle types and is part of Interstate 78. Expect heavy traffic, especially during rush hours, as this is a major route through the region.
The bridge is undergoing a major improvement program that includes plans for a replacement structure. This project will significantly modernize capacity and safety features for the crossing.
