Heron Rookery

The Heron Rookery spans 320 acres along the Little Calumet River, featuring tall sycamore trees and dense forest with beech and maple species. The site provides breeding habitat within a largely undisturbed woodland setting.

The protected area was established in 1966 to preserve the heron colonies. In 1980, the Indiana Department of Correction transferred an additional 69 acres to the National Park Service, expanding the conservation effort.

This site serves as a viewing area where visitors can watch great blue herons building nests and caring for their young during the spring season.

The eastern parking area connects to a 3.3-mile trail system with packed dirt surfaces that require appropriate footwear, especially during wet conditions. Visitors should come prepared for damp and potentially slippery paths, particularly when visiting in spring months.

Male great blue herons arrive at nesting sites before females, presenting sticks between February and April to strengthen their pair bonds. This behavior reveals the complex courtship rituals that these birds perform each breeding season.
