Heron Rookery, Protected nesting area in Porter County, US.
The Heron Rookery extends over 320 acres along the Little Calumet River, featuring tall sycamore trees and dense forest with beech and maple trees.
In 1980, the Indiana State Department of Correction transferred 69 acres to the National Park Service, expanding the protected area established in 1966.
The rookery serves as an observation point where visitors can watch great blue herons construct nests and raise their offspring during spring months.
The eastern parking area connects to a 3.3-mile trail system with packed dirt surfaces that requires appropriate footwear, especially during wet conditions.
Male herons arrive at the nesting sites before females and present sticks between February and April, strengthening their pair bonds through this ritual.
