Florida Tropical House, Beach house in Beverly Shores, United States
The Florida Tropical House is a modern building on the Lake Michigan shoreline with flat roofs, open terraces, and extensive glazing throughout. Its structure uses typical features of modern architecture and appears light and open through its design approach.
The building was created in 1933 for the Chicago World's Fair and showed new living ideas of that era. It was moved in 1935 by developer Robert Bartlett to Beverly Shores, where it still stands today.
The interior displays bright yellow, coral, and blue tones that translate Florida's coastal look to Indiana's continental environment. These colors create a southern impression that stands out clearly from typical regional architecture.
Visiting happens only during annual public tours, as this is required by a contract between private lessees and Indiana Dunes National Park. Visitors should check ahead for dates and plan accordingly.
The flat roof design draws from ocean liner construction methods and integrates maritime engineering into residential architecture. This surprising detail connects ship-building innovation with everyday lakefront living.
