John H. Barker Mansion, Gilded Age mansion in Michigan City, United States

The John H. Barker Mansion is a large house with maroon brick walls and limestone accents, taking its present form around the turn of the 20th century. Inside are roughly 38 rooms with fireplaces and bathrooms spread throughout its expansive layout.

The house was originally built in 1857 but underwent major changes between 1905 and 1909 to reflect the growing industrial wealth of its owners. This transformation occurred as railroad production became central to the family's fortune and the region's development.

The Barker family shaped the region's economy through railroad manufacturing, and the house reflects their wealth and influence. Walking through the rooms gives a sense of how a prosperous industrial family lived during the early 1900s.

You can explore the house through guided tours that show the restored rooms and original furnishings. Be aware that there are stairs between different levels throughout the building.

Each room features architectural elements from different European styles, with many materials imported directly from their countries of origin. This international mix of design details makes every room feel distinct.
