Muscatatuck County Park, County park in Vernon, Indiana
Muscatatuck County Park is a forested park in Indiana featuring multiple hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through the property near the Muscatatuck River. The grounds include picnic areas, grills, and stone structures built during the 1930s that serve as shelters and scenic overlooks.
The park began in 1921 as Indiana's fourth state park, originally called Vinegar Mills State Park after a stone-cutting mill on the grounds. During the 1930s, workers from federal job programs built the stone structures and landscape features that remain visible throughout the property today.
The stone structures built during the 1930s remain visible throughout the grounds, showcasing the craftsmanship of workers who shaped paths and shelter areas that visitors still use today.
The park features around 10 miles (16 kilometers) of well-marked trails that work for both hikers and bikers depending on your preference. Picnic areas and shelters are spread throughout the grounds, giving you several good spots to stop and rest along the way.
The park holds a relocated schoolhouse called Walnut Grove Schoolhouse originally built in 1913, which offers a glimpse into local school history. This moved structure shows how historic buildings can be preserved within park settings to add educational value to outdoor visits.
