John and Anna Vreeland House

The John and Anna Vreeland House is a house museum located at 971 Valley Road, built with sandstone walls and topped with a gambrel roof from the early 1800s. Inside, period rooms contain furnishings and household objects that show how people lived in rural New Jersey during that time.

Built around 1817, the house represents early Dutch settlement in the area and later passed to other prominent families who farmed the land. It gained protection through National Register listing in 1982 after being moved from its original location in 1973 to save it from demolition.

The interior spaces reflect how Dutch settlers and their descendants lived and organized their homes in this region. Visitors can observe period furnishings and room layouts that show daily routines of farming families from that era.

The house is accessible on foot and the interior rooms are easy to navigate, though some areas may have uneven floors typical of older buildings. Plan enough time to walk through all the rooms and read the information displays at your own pace.

The original building sat in a different location about 1,000 feet away before the city moved it in 1973 to save it from being torn down during urban expansion. This relocation is unusual and shows an early commitment to preserving the area's architectural heritage through creative problem-solving.
