Garret Mountain Reservation, Protected natural area in Passaic County, United States
Garret Mountain Reservation is a protected natural area on First Watchung Mountain in Passaic County, New Jersey, with open grass fields, walking trails, and a small pond called Barbour's Pond. From higher points on the grounds, the Paterson cityscape is clearly visible in the distance.
The area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1967, as part of the Great Falls of Paterson-Garret Mountain natural heritage site. The mountain itself was shaped by volcanic activity long before European settlers arrived in the region.
Lambert Castle, a stone mansion built in the late 1800s, stands on the grounds and now houses the Passaic County Museum. Inside, visitors can see displays on the history of the region and the people who lived there.
The reservation is open year-round and offers trails for walking, open areas for picnics, basketball courts, and an equestrian center where riding lessons are available. Wearing sturdy shoes is a good idea since some trails cross uneven ground.
The ridge sits along a main migration corridor, making the reservation one of the top birdwatching spots in New Jersey. Over 150 bird species have been recorded here, including more than 30 types of warblers passing through each spring and fall.
