The cornerstone of the Paterson National Guard Armory was placed during Memorial Day celebrations in 1894, marking New Jersey's first armory under 1889 legislation.
The armory served as a central gathering space for the community, hosting sporting events, circus performances, concerts, and boxing matches throughout its operation.
The building suffered extensive damage from a fire in 2015, leading to its subsequent demolition with select architectural elements preserved in the Paterson Museum.
The facility supported military deployments for multiple conflicts and provided emergency shelter during severe weather events until its closure in 1983.
