New Century Club, clubhouse in Utica, New York
The New Century Club is a historic property in Utica featuring a Greek Revival-style auditorium with tall columns and red brick construction. The main building originated as a mansion in the 1820s, and an auditorium wing was added in the late 1800s to accommodate large gatherings of around 600 people.
The club was established in 1893 to give women greater influence in community affairs. After acquiring the property in 1895, it became a hub for women's rights activities, hosting prominent speakers including Susan B. Anthony and Jeannette Rankin who addressed suffrage and social issues.
The New Century Club served as a gathering place where women met to address community needs and push for change. You can still see the club's name marked at the main entrance, a reminder of the women who once worked here for social progress.
The site is located on Genesee Street in Utica's historic district and is currently undergoing restoration work. While the interior is not accessible to visitors, you can view the exterior architecture featuring red brick and tall columns from the street.
The auditorium was the first large performance hall in Utica with seating for around 600 people. Beyond political speeches, it served as the venue for school graduations until 1910 and later hosted the Children's Theatre during the 1970s to support local youth.
