Isabella Breckinridge House, Renaissance Revival residence in York, United States.
The Isabella Breckinridge House is a Renaissance Revival residence featuring an H-shaped floor plan with a central block flanked by two wings, topped with a hip roof and Dutch gables. The structure spans 23 rooms across an expansive property that slopes toward the York River.
The house was built in 1905 for Mary Goodrich, wife of tire manufacturer B.F. Goodrich, and underwent major reconstruction following a fire in the mid-1920s. This rebuilding shaped much of its current form.
The interior blends Mediterranean style with classical details, visible in the stuccoed walls and wrought iron railings that line the main staircase. Visitors can observe these elements while moving through the rooms.
The house sits along US Route 1 in York and spreads across roughly 26 acres with views of the river valley. Plan time to explore both the interior rooms and the surrounding grounds.
From 1974 to 2004, the property served as a conference center for nearby Bowdoin College before returning to private hands. This institutional chapter left its mark on how the building was maintained.
