Eliza Howell Park, Public park in Brightmoor, Detroit, United States.
Eliza Howell Park is a 250-acre green space in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood situated within the Rouge River floodplain, featuring hardwood forests, prairie meadows, and woodland trails. The landscape transitions between dense forest sections and open meadows that shape the terrain.
The property became a Detroit park in 1936 when the family of Eliza Howell, a Metro Detroit real estate developer, donated the land to the city. This donation preserved the natural area from urban development.
The park serves as a gathering place where neighbors walk, observe wildlife, and spend quiet time in nature. The open meadows and wooded paths create a space where people from the city can step away from urban life.
Over two miles of walking paths crisscross the grounds, including crushed limestone trails accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Rustic woodland routes offer more challenging options for visitors seeking deeper exploration.
A notable environmental art installation was created in 2021 by artist Patrick Dougherty with help from about 150 artists and volunteers. This work shows how collaborative art can strengthen the connection between community and nature.
