East Windsor Academy, historic school in East Windsor, Connecticut
East Windsor Academy is a two-story brick building with a simple gable roof and brownstone foundation located in Scantic, Connecticut. The front features six sections with doors on the outer ends and windows in between, while side gables are decorated with ornamental fanlights.
The building was constructed in 1817 as a private academy for local students and served education for many years. In 1871 it was sold to the First Congregational Church, which used it for gatherings, before it reopened as a school in 1896 and operated until 1938.
The building is named after the Scantic village where it stands and reflects how important education was to the early community. It served as a gathering place for church events and community meetings, showing its role as a social center in local life.
The site is located on the east side of Scantic Road in a quiet area with old houses and small shops nearby. The building and surrounding structures can be visited during summer Saturday morning hours or by arranging appointments at other times of the year.
A noted student at this academy was Junius Morgan, father of J. P. Morgan the famous financier, connecting the building to American financial history. Ezra Stiles, a respected teacher, also worked here and contributed to the institution's reputation.
