Cockram Mill, Historic gristmill in Patrick County, US.
Cockram Mill is a historic grain-processing facility in Patrick County that features a two to three-story rectangular structure built on a concrete foundation. The main building stands approximately 111 feet long and 24 feet wide, situated near the Dan River with additional structures spread across the property.
The mill was built around 1885 by Jesse Blackard to serve the local farming community with grain processing. A residence for the miller was added to the property in 1921, reflecting the growth and importance of the operation over time.
The mill served as a gathering place for the surrounding community, where families would bring their grain for processing. Such mills were essential gathering spots in rural life, connecting neighbors through shared work and commerce.
The mill is located near Meadows of Dan and can be reached via US 58 East where it connects with VA 632. The site encompasses about 13 acres, giving visitors room to walk around and view the different structures that make up the complex.
The building retains its original mechanical components, including two metal turbine wheels that have been driving the grain processing since construction. These preserved machine parts reveal the engineering skill of late 19th-century craftsmen who built the facility.
