James Monroe Family Home Site, Archaeological site near Colonial Beach, Virginia, US.
The James Monroe Family Home Site is an archaeological site near Colonial Beach, Virginia, where excavations have exposed the foundation remains of an early American wooden dwelling. The open grounds are divided into several zones, each corresponding to a different part of farm life on the property.
Archaeologists first uncovered the remains in 1976 and identified the site as the birthplace and childhood home of James Monroe, who later became the fifth president of the United States. Continued work at the site has since added more detail to the picture of life there in the 18th century.
The site marks the place where James Monroe grew up, and excavations have revealed traces of daily life shared by both the Monroe family and the enslaved people who lived and worked alongside them. Walking through the open grounds, visitors can see the footprint of the main house and the separate areas where different parts of farm life took place.
A visit during the warmer months tends to be more rewarding, as excavation areas are more accessible and guides may be present on site. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is a good idea since much of the grounds are open fields with uneven surfaces.
During the excavations, researchers realized that the structure they had first identified as the main house actually turned out to be a different building on the property. This kind of reversal is rare in archaeology and shows how work beneath an old garden can completely change the reading of a site.
