Cobb Point Bar Light, Navigation lighthouse in St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States.
Cobb Point Bar Light is a navigation beacon positioned at the western entrance of the Wicomico River near Cobb Island in Maryland. It marks the challenging waterway where vessels enter to reach the regional ports along the river.
The structure was built in 1889 to guide shipping through the challenging channel. A fire destroyed the original building in 1939, but navigation support continued with a modern beacon mounted on the surviving foundation.
The lighthouse supported maritime trade in the region, where up to 350 vessels anchored simultaneously for oyster and tobacco commerce.
The beacon sits in a remote location on the water and is best viewed from a boat. Visitors should arrange waterborne access to see the site and explore the surrounding river landscape.
The lighthouse design replicated the Tangier Sound lighthouse plans, incorporating metalwork delivered to Baltimore for construction.
