St. Clement's Island State Park, Historic state park in St. Mary's County, Maryland
St. Clement's Island State Park is a nature preserve on a Potomac River island in St. Mary's County, featuring walking trails, a lighthouse, and a memorial cross. The grounds span about 40 acres and allow visitors to explore the landscape and historical structures.
The island was the 1634 landing site of Maryland's first English settlers, who sailed for four months from the Isle of Wight. By 1919, the military redesigned the grounds as a naval facility, constructing landing strips and dismantling most original colonial buildings.
This island hosted the first Catholic Mass celebrated in English-American colonies, an event led by Father Andrew White. The religious service became central to how early settlers understood their mission and community identity.
Access to the island requires a water taxi from Coltons Point, which operates between May and September. Plan ahead, as service is limited and guided tours are often required to visit the grounds.
The island has shrunk significantly from its original 80 acres due to ongoing wave erosion along the shoreline. This natural loss continually reshapes how visitors experience the historic grounds today.
