Whitewater Shaker Settlement is a historic district with original brick buildings and farm structures positioned along the Dry Fork of the Whitewater River in Hamilton County, Ohio. The site includes residential, workshop, and agricultural buildings that reveal how the community organized its physical space.
The community was established in 1824 and operated as a Shaker settlement until 1916. The site and its buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The settlement reflects how its residents shaped their buildings and spaces around shared work and craftsmanship. Visitors can observe how furniture making, textile work, and farming were organized within the community's approach to daily life and practical design.
The site is maintained by the Great Parks of Hamilton County, and tours can be arranged through the Friends of White Water Shaker Village organization. Check ahead for tour schedules and site conditions before planning your visit.
During the Civil War, Morgan's Raiders moved through the area in 1863, but an alert mill worker helped the community protect most of its property. Only two horses were lost during the incursion.
