The house served as a tavern and post office in the early 1800s at a toll gate on the road connecting Cincinnati and Brookville, Indiana. It later became a target during Civil War raids in the region.

The building took its name from its distance from Cincinnati, a measure that meant something to travelers passing through the region. Such naming patterns show how people organized their journeys through unfamiliar territory.
