Shawnee Lookout Archeological District

The Shawnee Lookout Archaeological District spans 2,000 acres of land, containing 46 archaeological sites across river bottoms and wooded hillsides near Cleves.

Native American settlements in this area date back 10,000 years, with evidence from Archaic, Hopewell, and Fort Ancient cultures through multiple archaeological layers.

The district contains remains of ancient pottery kilns, copper ornaments, marine shell decorations, and stone tools that demonstrate advanced crafting techniques of prehistoric peoples.

Thirty-four of the archaeological sites are located within the public Shawnee Lookout Park, which provides access to researchers and educational programs.

Excavations have uncovered extensive biological remains including bird bones, fish bones, deer remains, and turtle shells, revealing detailed information about prehistoric diets.
