George Washington, Bronze sculpture at George Washington University, United States.
George Washington (Fairbanks) consists of five bronze heads of the founding father positioned at different intersections across the George Washington University campus. Each head sits on a granite base and is placed to be encountered by students and visitors as they move through the academic grounds.
Artist Avard Fairbanks created the five bronze heads, which received copyright registration in 1975. An official dedication ceremony took place at the university in 1993 to mark their presence on campus.
The bronze heads serve as orientation landmarks for students and visitors moving across campus, helping them locate key areas and buildings. They have become familiar reference points that shape how people navigate through the academic grounds.
The sculptures are spread across different areas of the campus and are best explored on foot. Plan to spend time walking between locations to see all five heads and appreciate each one up close.
During 2020 protests, one bronze head was temporarily removed from its base but remained unharmed and was later recovered near its original location. This event illustrates how these artworks became part of broader conversations about history and public spaces.
