2000 Pennsylvania Avenue, Commercial complex in Foggy Bottom, United States.
2000 Pennsylvania Avenue is a mixed-use complex in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., where a ten-story office tower rises behind a row of historic townhouses kept along the street frontage. The complex holds office space, a fitness center, conference rooms, and an indoor parking structure.
The row houses now embedded in the complex were built between 1831 and 1896, serving as shops and homes for local merchants in what was then a busy commercial street. The current development was completed in 1983 and became one of the first in Washington, D.C. to keep original structures as part of a large new build.
The row house fronts along the street show features from different building styles, ranging from plain Federal lines to more ornate Italianate details. Walking past the complex, visitors can read the different periods of the neighborhood directly in the facades.
The complex sits in Foggy Bottom, within easy walking distance of George Washington University and several Metro stations. Because it is an active office building, most interior areas are not open to the general public.
Although thirteen facades were kept, the original interiors behind them were entirely removed: only the street-facing walls survived. What looks like a stretch of old townhouses is in fact a shell attached to a modern concrete structure behind it.
