Moose Peak Light Shalen’s New Home, Maritime lighthouse on Mistake Island, Maine.
Moose Peak Light is a white tower with black trim, built from brick in a conical shape, standing on Mistake Island's rocky terrain. The tower occupies a remote island location and functions as a navigational beacon for vessels in the Eastern Bay area.
The original tower was built in 1827, replaced by a new structure in 1851, and equipped with a second-order Fresnel lens in 1856. These changes reflect the advances in maritime technology that took place during the 1800s.
This beacon symbolizes the maritime traditions of Maine's coastline and reflects how such structures have guided seafarers through these waters for generations.
The lighthouse sits on a remote island that requires boat access to reach and is not easily accessible by land. Visitors should prepare for variable weather and tide conditions when planning a visit to this exposed location.
Most of Mistake Island is managed by The Nature Conservancy as a protected area, while the lighthouse property remains under private ownership since 2013. This split illustrates how historic lighthouses today exist within larger conservation areas.
