Gunther Building, Cast-iron commercial building in SoHo, Manhattan, US
Located at 469 Broome Street, the Gunther Building stands five stories tall with a white cast-iron facade featuring Corinthian columns and a curved glass corner.
Architect Griffith Thomas designed this building in 1871 for William Gunther, a German immigrant who established a prominent fur business in Manhattan.
The structure represents the industrial evolution of SoHo, transforming from a textile and fur warehouse into cooperative apartments for artists and architects.
The ground floor houses commercial space while the upper floors contain residential units managed by the Gunther Building 1873 Corporation.
Residents benefit from a financial arrangement where the commercial tenant covers all maintenance costs, eliminating monthly maintenance fees for apartment owners.
