Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot, Military supply depot in Jeffersonville, United States.
The Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot is a large military complex featuring brick buildings with arched glass entryways and multiple warehouse structures spread across several city blocks near the Ohio River. The renovated Quadrangle section now serves as the city hall, housing various government offices and commercial businesses within its restored spaces.
The facility was founded in 1862 and expanded to over 1,000 acres during the Civil War to supply Union forces with essential materials. It became a critical supply center for the northern states and played a major role in sustaining the war effort.
The depot served as the main employment hub for the city, shaping the daily lives and economic fortunes of thousands of local families. Workers from diverse backgrounds came together here, making it a vital social center that defined the community for generations.
The complex is walkable and offers various entry points for visitors, with the Quadrangle section easily accessible as the city's administrative center. Since the site remains an active government and business hub, daytime visits work best when offices and commercial spaces are open.
The facility earned fame during the Spanish-American War as the largest shirt factory in America, producing around 100,000 uniform shirts monthly. This production milestone demonstrated how a regional depot could become a national manufacturing powerhouse.
