National City Tower, Office tower in Downtown Louisville, US.
National City Tower is a 40-floor office building in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, at 101 South Fifth Street, reaching about 156 meters above street level. Its exterior is made of aluminum and glass wrapped around a steel frame.
The building was completed in 1972 by the architectural firm Harrison & Abramovitz and held the title of Kentucky's tallest structure until 1993. Its construction marked the start of a period of modern high-rise development in Louisville's downtown.
The lobby shows the corporate style of the 1970s, with smooth surfaces and little decoration that visitors can see when entering from the street. This look shaped how many office buildings in Louisville's downtown core appeared during that period.
The tower stands on a main downtown street and is easy to reach on foot from surrounding blocks. Ground-floor retail spaces let you step inside and see the lobby without needing any special access.
The tower rests on reinforced concrete piles driven deep into the ground to carry the weight of the steel structure above. This approach from the 1970s allowed the building to stay slim on the outside while being much heavier than it looks.
