Construction began in 1849 after the Diocese of Bardstown moved to Louisville, with architect William Keely completing the structure for dedication in 1852.
The cathedral maintains daily lunch services for people experiencing homelessness and operates educational programs through the Center for Interfaith Relations.
Located at 433 South Fifth Street, the cathedral holds daily masses at noon on weekdays, with additional services on Saturdays at 5:30 PM and Sundays at multiple times.
The Coronation Window ranks among the oldest American-made stained glass installations, depicting Mary's crowning through intricate glass work and symbolism.
