Jefferson Monument, Bronze sculpture near Jefferson County Court House in Louisville, United States.
The Jefferson Monument is a bronze sculpture in Louisville depicting Thomas Jefferson standing on a bell-shaped base. The structure combines dark Quincy granite with bronze elements that were cast in Berlin.
Artist Moses Jacob Ezekiel created this monument in 1899 following a commission from the Bernheim Brothers. The work honored Thomas Jefferson and his importance to American history.
The four figures surrounding the bell base each represent a principle admired in late 19th century America: liberty, justice, equality, and community. These carvings show what the civic leaders of the time wanted to celebrate in their city.
The monument stands on Jefferson Street and is easy to locate in downtown Louisville. You can view it directly from the street as you walk through the area.
The base is shaped like the Liberty Bell and measures about 10 feet across. This unusual design brings together two iconic American symbols in a single work of art.
