Lafayette Grammar and High School, voortgezet onderwijsinstelling in de Verenigde Staten
Lafayette Grammar and High School is a historic school building in Norfolk, Virginia, constructed around 1906 by architect Vance Hebard. An addition for high school students was added in 1910, and the building served nearly 1,000 students before closure in the 1970s and conversion to apartments.
The school opened in 1906 as the largest of its kind in the area before expanding with a high school wing in 1910. It became tied to Norfolk's growth and was officially incorporated into the city in 1923 when Lafayette Park was annexed.
The school served as a gathering point for the neighborhood, especially since no large churches existed nearby. Its residential design reflects the values of an early suburban community that placed importance on education and public buildings.
The building is visible from the street and protected as a historic landmark, but remains private residential property that cannot be accessed inside. Visitors should be respectful when viewing or photographing the exterior architecture.
The building was designed with an unusually intimate residential architecture for a school, resembling historic Virginia homes rather than the typical institutional look of public buildings. This design choice gave it the appearance of a large private house rather than a public institution.
