32 Old Slip, High-rise building in Financial District, Manhattan, US
32 Old Slip is a high-rise office tower in the Financial District with 36 floors reaching 575 feet high. Its facade combines granite and glass with a distinctive octagonal curtain wall system in the upper levels that sets it apart from neighboring skyscrapers.
The site was formerly the location of the United States Assay Office until developer Howard Ronson acquired it in 1983. The current structure was completed in 1987 and has defined the skyline of the Financial District since then.
The structure displays hallmarks of 1980s postmodern design through its mix of traditional and contemporary architectural elements. Its granite and glass exterior with the octagonal upper section became a recognizable feature of the Financial District skyline.
The building is an active workplace with office spaces and modern elevators throughout. The fire department area at street level is visible to the public, though the rest of the tower is primarily accessible for business visits.
The ground floor houses New York City Fire Department Engine Company 4 and Ladder Company 15. This arrangement shows how contemporary office towers can integrate public services into their structure.
