55 Wall Street, Bank building in Financial District, Manhattan, United States

55 Wall Street is an eight-story structure displaying Greek Revival design, with two stacked colonnades of twelve Ionic columns each across its granite facade. Inside, a banking hall features marble floors and 60-foot vaulted ceilings, while today the entire building contains 101 luxury residences and event spaces.

The building rose between 1836 and 1842, replacing the former Merchants' Exchange that once occupied this site. It then served as the National City Bank headquarters from 1908 to 1961.

The building shaped the Financial District with its towering Ionic columns, reflecting an era when banks displayed stability and trust through stone and sculpture. Visitors can enter the marble banking hall with its soaring vaulted ceilings and sense how wealth and power were expressed here.

The building sits near multiple subway stations and is easily reached by public transit in the Financial District. The banking hall and public areas are accessible to walk through, though most upper floors remain private residences.

The structure housed historical jail cells dating from its time as a customs house, used to hold smugglers between 1863 and 1899. These hidden rooms beneath the banking hall tell a lesser-known chapter of the site that visitors often overlook.
