LaPorte County Courthouse, County courthouse in La Porte, United States.
LaPorte County Courthouse is a county courthouse built with red sandstone featuring a central tower and intricately carved stone work on its exterior. The structure displays the characteristics of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture with its distinctive form and detailed outer walls.
This building was constructed between 1892 and 1894, replacing two earlier courthouses that occupied the same site since 1833. The shift to the new structure marked the county's growth and changing needs at the turn from the 19th to the 20th century.
The courthouse shows handcrafted details from the late 19th century that visitors notice when entering the main hall. The elaborate stonework and decorative elements reflect the craftsmanship style common in public buildings of that era.
The building sits at the corner of Lincolnway and Michigan Avenue and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should expect the structure to be open during county business hours and to house administrative functions.
A cornerstone from the 1848 predecessor building was incorporated during construction of the new structure and remains part of it today. Additionally, a notable stained glass window depicting the Goddess of Justice adorns the interior space.
