Marion Ridgeway Polygonal Barn
Marion Ridgeway Polygonal Barn, Round barn from 1882 in La Porte, United States
The Marion Ridgeway Polygonal Barn is a nine-sided wooden structure topped with a Gothic Revival roof and central cupola. Inside, pie-shaped stalls radiate around a central hall designed to efficiently house the animals.
Marion J. Ridgeway built this barn in 1882 to support his horse breeding business raising Clydesdales, English Coaches, and Norman Drafts. The structure reflects the innovative design techniques farmers were developing during this period.
The name refers to a natural passage between woods and prairie that once guided travelers along traditional paths. You can still sense this location's role as an important landmark when walking around the structure.
The barn sits south of La Porte near Highway 35 and is easy to spot from the road. Keep in mind the property is private, so viewing from the exterior is the practical approach.
In 2001, the structure underwent a remarkable rescue when it was lifted from its original foundation. The building was then secured onto a new concrete base while preserving the original fieldstones from the old foundation.
