Suffolk County Missile Annex, Cold War missile base in Westhampton, United States.
Suffolk County Missile Annex is a former military installation in Westhampton spanning about 187 acres that once housed 56 launcher shelters organized into two operational flights. The structures show the grid layout typical of a missile base with distributed individual silos designed to control air defense missiles.
The installation was activated in 1959 and became the second of its kind in the US designed to control air defense missiles during rising international tensions. It was later decommissioned as a military site and the land repurposed for civilian use.
The former missile site was once a hidden part of daily life in the region, shaping how local residents understood national defense during the Cold War. Today, the remaining structures serve as reminders of that era and the technical solutions built to protect the country.
The site is not open to the general public today since it is used for official parking and other municipal purposes. Visitors interested in exploring the grounds should check with the county authorities beforehand to see if a visit is permitted.
The site contained a specialized assembly and maintenance facility where missiles were prepared using a coaxial distribution system before transport to launcher positions. This technical arrangement was unique and allowed rapid preparation for emergency deployment.
