Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Historic house and nature reserve in Nassau County, New York
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is a protected historic house and grounds in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York. The main building is a late 19th-century wood-frame home with large windows and a covered porch, set within a property that also includes walking trails, a salt marsh, and a small beach.
The house was built in 1884 for Theodore Roosevelt, who chose it as his permanent home outside of New York City. He lived there until his death in 1919, and during his presidency it served as a working base for many official meetings.
Inside the house, original furniture and personal objects remain in place, giving a sense of how the Roosevelt family actually lived day to day. The rooms reflect a private person who valued outdoor life but also wanted a real home, not a formal residence.
The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, but visiting the house requires a reserved guided tour, available only Thursday through Sunday. The short path to the front door is paved and has a ramp, though the upper floors inside can only be reached by stairs.
Roosevelt's grave is located on the property itself, in a simple plot at Young's Memorial Cemetery that visitors can reach on foot. During his presidency, he received foreign dignitaries and signed official documents at the house, making it a functioning seat of government for stretches of time.
