Faris Caves, Protected caves in Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States

Faris Caves are three square chambers with arched ceilings carved into Dakota Sandstone along the Smoky Hill River in central Kansas. Each measures about 12 feet (3.7 meters) and was excavated using basic hand tools into the natural rock.

Colorado miner Charles Griffee carved out these chambers in the 1880s using a pickaxe and sold the property to the Faris family in 1893. The site later became protected land managed by the state.

The caves served as storage space, springhouse, generator room, and temporary schoolhouse at different times. People adapted them to their daily needs because of their cool temperature and solid structure.

Bring your own flashlight or headlamp since the caves have no installed lighting and are quite dark inside. Information about current access and visiting conditions is available from Kanopolis State Park office.

A natural spring runs through one of the caves, creating a natural cooling system that early residents used to preserve food and supplies. This flowing water still remains today, making it a notable feature.
