Praia da Baleia

Praia da Baleia is a roughly 21-kilometer coastal stretch in Ceará state with dark sand and strong Atlantic waves. The shoreline and terrain shift noticeably depending on the tide.

The beach got its name from whale bones discovered during low tide, which entered the local historical records. This finding still shapes how the place is remembered.

The nearby village depends on fishing, and local fishermen shape daily life along the shore. Restaurants in the area serve fresh catch brought directly from the boats.

The beach lies south of Fortaleza and can be reached via the CE-085 highway, with regular buses from the capital. Visitors should check tide times, as conditions vary greatly throughout the day.

At low tide the beach expands to around 100 meters wide and reveals sandbars and natural pools as the water retreats. This temporarily creates different landscapes to explore.
