Theater an der Winkelwiese operates from the basement of Villa Tobler, featuring a flexible stage configuration for diverse theatrical performances.
The theater opened on June 16, 1964, with a Swiss premiere of Harold Pinter's play, under the founding direction of Maria von Ostfelden.
The venue maintains a fellowship program that has trained 55 playwrights in scenic writing, contributing to Switzerland's theatrical landscape.
The theater presents two to three original productions each season, with performances scheduled throughout the year and accessible by public transportation.
Gustav Wegmann designed Villa Tobler's architecture, while Jakob Zweifel transformed its cellar into a performance space.
